My Retreat Garden Rooms  ·  020 3818 5911  ·  Surrey & Home Counties

Working from home has become the norm, but working from the kitchen table or a cramped spare bedroom is not a long-term solution. A garden office gives you a calm, dedicated workspace that is physically separate from the house, so you can focus properly during the day and genuinely switch off at the end of it.

We design and build bespoke garden offices across Surrey, Berkshire and Buckinghamshire. Every build is fully insulated, fully fitted, and made to the same standard as your home.

Quick answer
A bespoke garden office from My Retreat typically starts from around £15,000, depending on size and specification. Most customers choose a 3m × 3m or 3m × 4m footprint, which gives a comfortable single-person workspace. Larger builds for multiple desks or studio use sit higher. See our full cost guide for a detailed breakdown.

Why a Garden Office Makes Such a Difference

The physical separation is the thing most customers talk about after their build. When your office is in the garden, you walk to work. You walk home. That boundary between work and home life, which disappears entirely on a kitchen table setup, comes back. Productivity improves. So does the ability to switch off in the evening.

A spare bedroom conversion can work in the short term, but it shares walls, noise and interruptions with the rest of the house. A garden office does not. It is yours, it is quiet, and it is there every day regardless of what else is going on at home.

Designed Around the Way You Work

No two customers work the same way, and no two garden offices we build are identical. We design around your needs from the start rather than adapting a standard product.

Natural light

Large landscape windows and glazed doors bring in natural light throughout the day. A well-lit workspace reduces eye strain and makes the room feel significantly larger than its footprint.

Year-round insulation

Standard builds use foam EPS insulation in the walls, floor and roof, which offers the same thermal performance as Rockwool. PIR is available as an upgrade for builds needing to meet building regulations. Comfortable in January, cool in July.

Electrics throughout

Sockets, USB points, data cabling, lighting and a consumer unit are all included as standard. We design the electrical layout around your equipment before a single cable is run.

Recessed spotlights

Standard recessed LED spotlights provide clean, even light across the workspace. Combined with glazed doors and windows, the room is bright and comfortable to work in at any time of day.

Sliding or French doors

Open the office up to the garden on good days or keep it sealed and silent when you need to focus. The choice of door style and opening direction is yours from the design stage.

One point of contact

Rated 5 stars on Google. Every My Retreat build is managed by a single dedicated person from first conversation to final handover. No subcontractors passed around, no chasing for updates.

What to Think About Before You Build

A garden office is one of the more straightforward builds we do, but a few decisions at the planning stage have a significant impact on how the finished space works day to day.

Size

A 3m x 3m room is a comfortable single-person office with space for a desk, storage and a small meeting area. If you take video calls frequently and want a more considered backdrop, or if two people will use the space, 3m x 4m or 4m x 4m gives you considerably more flexibility. We design around how you will actually use the room, not a standard footprint.

Connectivity

Broadband to the garden office is worth planning at the build stage rather than retrofitting. Options include a direct ethernet run from the house, a powerline adapter, or a dedicated wireless access point mounted on the exterior. We can advise on the best approach for your garden layout and the distance from the house.

Heating and cooling

All rooms come with opening windows and doors as standard, which handles most of the year in a well-insulated space. For customers who want precise temperature control, particularly in a room used for full working days, air conditioning is available as an upgrade. It heats and cools efficiently and is the most popular optional extra on office builds.

Power requirements

Most office setups run comfortably on a standard 32 amp supply. If you are running multiple monitors, a server, audio equipment or other high-draw hardware, let us know at the design stage and we size the supply accordingly rather than leaving you to manage it later.

Planning permission

Most garden offices fall within permitted development rights and do not require planning permission. Whether that applies to your property depends on factors specific to your home, including whether your permitted development rights are intact, whether you are in a conservation area, and how much of your garden is already built on. It is the responsibility of the customer to confirm their planning position before proceeding. If you need help with this, we have an architect available as an additional service who can check on your behalf. Read our full planning guide for more detail.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does a garden office cost?
A bespoke garden office from My Retreat typically starts from around £15,000 fully fitted, depending on size and specification. This includes foundations, full insulation, electrics, double glazing and installation. Upgrades such as air conditioning, bespoke joinery or larger glazing panels will sit higher. See our full cost guide for a detailed breakdown by size and spec.
Do I need planning permission for a garden office in Surrey?
Most garden offices fall within permitted development rights and do not require planning permission. Whether this applies to your property depends on factors specific to your home, such as whether your permitted development rights are intact, whether you are in a conservation area, and how much of your garden is already built on. It is the customer's responsibility to confirm their planning position. If you need help, we have an architect available as an additional service. Read our full planning guide here.
Can I run a business from a garden office?
Yes. Many of our customers use their garden office for remote working, consultancy, creative businesses, therapy or coaching. If you are seeing clients at the property, it is worth checking with your local council and mortgage provider, as this may affect permitted development rights or your mortgage terms. Most home-based businesses with no client footfall have no issues at all.
Is a garden office usable all year round?
Yes. Every My Retreat garden office is fully insulated using foam EPS insulation in the walls, floor and roof, which has the same thermal performance as Rockwool. With opening windows as standard and air conditioning available as an upgrade, the room is comfortable to work in at any time of year. This is a proper workspace, not a seasonal shed.
Does a garden office include electrics?
Yes. Sockets, lighting, USB points and a consumer unit are included as standard. We design the electrical layout around your equipment and working style before installation begins. If you need data cabling, additional circuits or specific socket positions for standing desks or AV equipment, we build that in at the design stage.
How long does it take to build a garden office?
The build itself typically takes 3 to 5 days on site. Lead time from order to installation is usually 8 to 12 weeks depending on our current schedule and the complexity of your build. We give you a confirmed installation date when you place your order.
Does a garden office add value to my home?
A well-built, fully insulated garden office typically adds between 5% and 15% to a property's value, according to independent research. In the Surrey commuter belt, where working from home is now the norm for a significant proportion of buyers, a dedicated garden office is an increasingly strong selling point.
Is a cheaper garden office a false economy?
In most cases, yes. A budget garden office will typically use thinner insulation, lower-grade glazing and cheaper cladding. The result is a room that is cold in winter, hot in summer and looks tired within a few years. A properly built garden office, insulated to the same standard as your home, costs more upfront but is cheaper and more comfortable over the long term. It will also add more value to your property.
