Garden Studio | Music, Art & Creative Spaces in Surrey
A dedicated creative space at the bottom of your garden. Purpose-built for music, art, photography, crafts or whatever your practice demands.
Creative work is difficult to do in a shared space. A musician needs to play without worrying about the rest of the household. An artist needs natural light and the freedom to leave work out. A photographer needs controlled light and a clean backdrop. A garden studio gives you a dedicated space for your practice that is separate from the house, available whenever you need it, and built to last.
We design and build bespoke garden studios across Surrey, Berkshire and Buckinghamshire. Every build is fully insulated, fully fitted, and tailored to the specific demands of how the space will be used.
Why a Dedicated Studio Makes Such a Difference
The problem with creative work in a shared space is not just the interruptions. It is the constant need to set up and pack away, to keep the noise down, to work around everyone else's schedule. A garden studio removes all of that. The space is yours, it is ready when you are, and it is physically separate from the rest of daily life.
Most of our studio customers tell us they work more consistently once they have a dedicated space. The separation matters. Walking out to the studio signals the start of a session in a way that opening a laptop on the kitchen table simply does not.

A garden studio has different requirements depending on what it is for. We design around your specific use from the start rather than adapting a standard product after the fact.
Natural light
Large landscape windows and glazed doors bring in natural light throughout the day. For artists and photographers in particular, the quality and direction of light is something we can design for at the planning stage.
Year-round insulation
Standard foam EPS insulation in walls, floor and roof gives the same thermal performance as Rockwool. A consistent temperature protects instruments, canvases and equipment as much as it protects the person working in the space.
Electrics designed for your use
Socket positions, circuit layout and consumer unit sizing are all determined by your equipment list. A music studio has very different power and earthing requirements to an art studio. We design the electrical layout before a single cable is run.
Acoustic consideration
Our standard build offers a meaningful level of sound reduction compared to a timber shed or converted room. For serious music use, additional acoustic treatment to the walls and ceiling can be discussed at the design stage.
Air conditioning upgrade
Precise temperature control matters for instruments, recording equipment and certain art materials. Air conditioning is available as an upgrade and is a popular choice on studio builds where the room will be used for long sessions.
Recessed spotlights
Standard recessed LED spotlights throughout. For studios where lighting quality is critical, the circuit layout can be designed to accommodate additional fixtures or a dimmer circuit alongside the standard spots.
What to Think About Before You Build
A garden studio is one of the more varied builds we do, because the requirements differ significantly depending on the creative use. A few decisions at the planning stage make a significant difference to how the finished space performs.
What is the primary use?
Music practice, recording, painting, photography, ceramics, crafts, yoga, writing. Each of these has different requirements for space, light, power, acoustics and flooring. Tell us what you are doing in the room and we design around that specifically rather than building a generic studio and hoping it works.
Size
A solo music practice room or artist studio works well from 3m x 3m. If you are recording with other musicians, running teaching sessions, or need space for large canvases and equipment, 3m x 4m or larger gives you considerably more flexibility. We design around actual use rather than a minimum footprint.
Acoustics
Our standard build provides a meaningful reduction in sound transmission compared to an unconverted space. For customers who need to play at volume, record to a professional standard, or avoid disturbing neighbours, additional acoustic treatment to the internal walls and ceiling can be incorporated at the build stage. This is considerably more effective than retrofitting panels to a finished room.
Power requirements
Most studio setups run comfortably on a standard 32 amp supply. If you are running recording equipment, amplifiers, lighting rigs or other high-draw hardware simultaneously, let us know at the design stage and we size the supply and circuit layout accordingly.
Planning permission
Most garden studios fall within permitted development rights and do not require planning permission. Whether that applies to your property depends on factors specific to your home, including whether your permitted development rights are intact, whether you are in a conservation area, and how much of your garden is already built on. It is the responsibility of the customer to confirm their planning position before proceeding. If you need help with this, we have an architect available as an additional service who can check on your behalf. Read our full planning guide for more detail.
