At My Retreat Garden Rooms we design and build bespoke garden rooms across Surrey and the surrounding Home Counties. Every room is manufactured in the UK to our own specification, installed in a single day in most cases, and built to be used every day of the year, not just when the weather is warm.
We are not a directory or a national franchise network. You deal directly with Kieron from the first conversation to the day you walk into your finished room. All trades, including electricians, installers and plasterers, are managed by Kieron throughout. You never have to coordinate or chase anyone yourself.
What We Build in Surrey
Every garden room we build is bespoke, designed around your garden, your brief and how you plan to use the space. The most common builds we deliver across Surrey are:
Garden Office
A proper workspace separate from the house, with fast broadband, recessed lighting and plastered walls. No commute, no kitchen noise.
Garden Room Gym
Reinforced floors, extended ceiling height, mirror walls, air conditioning. Built around how you train, not a standard template.
Cinema Room
Acoustic insulation, mood lighting, full AV setup with our partners At Smart Homes in Windlesham. The full experience at the bottom of your garden.
Studio
Art studio, music room, yoga space or therapy room. Quiet, naturally lit and completely yours.
Games Room / Teen Den
The room that gives the rest of the house back. Gaming setup, sofa, projector. Teenagers love it. Parents love it more.
Garden Bar and Entertaining
Canopy extension, bifold doors, outdoor kitchen nearby. Some of our most satisfying projects have been builds that turn a garden into a proper entertaining space.
How We Build
Our garden rooms are factory-built in pre-sectioned cassettes at our UK production facility, then delivered and installed on site. For most builds the structure is up and weather-tight in a single day. The full process from foundations to handover typically takes two to three weeks on site, with an 8 to 12 week lead time from deposit to start.
A few things that set our builds apart from other garden room companies in Surrey:
- Steel frame floor - powder-coated steel with adjustable feet. Does not rot, unlike timber floors used in cheaper builds. Levels out uneven ground without expensive groundworks
- 50mm EPS foam insulation in floors, walls and ceiling as standard, with PIR available as an upgrade for building regulations compliance
- EPDM rubber roof with a 20-year guarantee and a 50-year life expectancy
- Deceuninck UPVC or aluminium doors and windows, double-glazed, with matching interior and exterior colours throughout
- Recessed electrics wired back to your consumer unit with a signed certificate as standard
- Plastered and painted interior as standard, not melamine lining

What Our Surrey Customers Say
"What can we say? We are over the moon with our new room which we are using as a gym. It was important for us to go with someone we felt we could trust and put us at ease. Kieron is professional, honest and just a really lovely guy so it was an easy choice. From our initial meeting he really listened, through the design and tweaking to support what we wanted. His whole project management was flawless, ensuring everything went as smoothly as possible. The build and installation guys were utterly brilliant working in awful weather but ensuring perfection. We can't thank you enough, we love it."
"Huge thank you to the My Retreat Garden Rooms team for a speedy, timely, professional, top quality and customised garden room. Best in the business following our comprehensive research and now first hand experience, all of our friends and family have requested their details after seeing our build, so book while they're still available. Update 3 years after installation: just wanted to add to this review to say that our garden room continues to give us joy and that the novelty has not worn off. A huge thank you to the team for their availability for further modifications and aftercare, 10/10 service."
"Great experience with Kieron and the team. He really helped us build the vision at our clinic. He was the only one who actually came out to meet me in person and to really get what I wanted to be done, which is why I went with him in the first place. Seamless process. Everything was very easy from start to finish. Would highly recommend, especially if you're like us where we had a quite a weirdly shaped design to fit our back area. Building looks great too."
"What a great product. From design to installation the attention to detail is the key to successful completion and most important a very happy customer, me. Each aspect of the project is broken down and skilled craftsmen are employed to complete the task taking a pride in their work, many thanks Kieron."
"Kieron was brilliant from the moment I started to research options through the whole design and quoting phase. Site visit was super helpful, good to see samples in real life and get an understanding of what was possible in the space. Highly recommend."
Areas We Cover in Surrey
We build across the whole of Surrey and into the surrounding counties. The areas we cover most regularly include:
We also cover Berkshire and Buckinghamshire regularly, including Windsor, Bracknell, Maidenhead, Beaconsfield, Amersham and Gerrards Cross.
Planning Permission for Garden Rooms in Surrey
Most garden rooms in Surrey do not need planning permission. They fall under permitted development rights provided they meet certain conditions. The rules that matter most:
- Single-storey only
- Maximum 2.5m height if within 2m of a boundary
- Maximum 4m (dual-pitched) or 3m (flat or pent roof) if set further back
- Total outbuildings cannot cover more than 50% of your garden
- Must not be used as a self-contained separate dwelling
Surrey has several conservation areas, particularly around villages and older residential areas in Guildford, Reigate, Farnham and Dorking. If you are in one, check with your local planning authority before committing to a design. We deal with planning questions on every project and have an architect available as an additional service if a formal application is needed.
Cladding Options for Surrey Garden Rooms
Cladding is the most visible choice and has the biggest impact on how the finished room sits in your garden. The options we use most across Surrey are:
Cedar
Warm, rich and beautiful. Weathers well with periodic treatment. The most popular natural timber choice for premium Surrey builds. Best finished with a UV-protective oil every one to two years to retain its colour.
EcoScape slatted composite
Our most popular all-round option. Looks like timber, requires no maintenance, resistant to fading and moisture. Available in a range of colours. Must be fitted on site rather than in the factory due to weight, but will outlast any natural timber cladding.
Cedral fibre cement
Contemporary painted finish, extremely durable and fire resistant. Available in over 20 colours. A strong choice if you want a clean modern look that ties in with the render or colour of your house. Low maintenance once installed.
Thermowood
Heat-treated timber, more dimensionally stable than standard larch, sits at a mid-range price point. Will silver off over time if not oiled every 12 to 18 months, which some customers choose to let happen naturally.
Charred Larch (Shou Sugi Ban)
Striking contemporary look, resistant to pests and fire. Increasingly popular on Surrey builds where the house already has dark or industrial elements. Cut ends need charring after installation to maintain the protective layer.

In most cases, no. Permitted development covers the majority of Surrey gardens. Conservation areas are the main exception. We advise on this as part of every project at no extra cost.

A fully fitted, insulated garden room typically costs between £18,000 and £55,000 depending on size and specification. Our free 3D design tool gives you an instant price as you build.
Can I use a garden room all year round?
Yes, provided it is built with full insulation in the floor, walls and ceiling, double glazing and adequate heating. All My Retreat rooms are built to this standard as a minimum.
Does a garden room add value to my Surrey home?
A well-built, fully insulated garden room typically adds 5 to 10% to a property's value. In Surrey's market, where buyers place a strong premium on home office space, a quality garden room is a genuine selling point.
What foundation is best for a Surrey garden?
Concrete pile foundations are our standard choice and suit the vast majority of Surrey gardens including clay-heavy soil. Ground screws are available for sloped or uneven plots. We assess every site individually before recommending a foundation type.
