A garden room is an office, a spare bedroom, a playroom and a party room, all in one building. Christmas is when ours works hardest.
My Retreat Garden Rooms · November 2026

Christmas week in most houses looks the same. Everyone is indoors, there are coats on every chair, someone is on the sofa you wanted, and a laptop is still open on the kitchen table. We have a garden room in our own garden, and it changes how the whole season works. It is not just an office. It is the room that soaks up everything the house cannot.
What is a garden room useful for at Christmas? A fully insulated garden room gives you a second space for the busiest weeks of the year: somewhere for guests to sleep, somewhere for the children to play while you cook, somewhere for the family to go after Christmas dinner while you clear up, and somewhere to hold a party, with only one room to tidy afterwards.
A Room That Does More Than One Job
Most people think of a garden room as a home office, and for us it is exactly that on a normal weekday. But a room that is properly insulated, heated and plastered can be used for almost anything once the working day is over. That is the difference between a garden room and a summer house. It works in December as well as July.

Somewhere to Sleep When the House Is Full
Christmas is when the spare room is never spare. If there are more guests than beds, a garden room gives you an overflow space that feels like a proper room rather than a camp bed in the lounge. It is warm, it has its own door, and whoever is staying gets a bit of privacy too. It is incidental use, not a full annexe, but at the busiest time of the year it solves a real problem.
A Space for the Kids While You Cook
Anyone who has tried to cook Christmas dinner with excited children underfoot knows the problem. A garden room gives them somewhere to be. They can play, watch a film or take over a games table, and you can see them across the garden while you carry on in the kitchen. Everyone is happier, and nobody is being told to stay out from under your feet.
A Different Space After Weeks Indoors
Children spend a lot of the Christmas holidays inside the house, and a lot of that in their bedrooms. By the end of the first week everyone is tired of the same four walls. A garden room is a change of scene without going anywhere. A walk across the garden, a different room, different lighting, and the day feels new again. Teenagers in particular get somewhere to go that is not the living room.

Where the Family Goes After Christmas Dinner
Christmas dinner finishes, and the family has to go somewhere while the table is cleared and the kitchen is sorted. Grandparents, aunts, uncles, brothers, sisters and children all end up squeezed into the lounge or standing in the hall. With a garden room, they can all move out there. The drinks are out there, the games are out there, and the people clearing up can finish in peace, then join everyone when they are done. Nobody feels they are missing out, and nobody is in the way.
A Place to Party, Then One Room to Tidy
A party in the house spreads everywhere. Glasses on the stairs, crumbs in the lounge, someone asleep on the wrong sofa. A party in the garden room stays in the garden room. Everyone gravitates there, with the lights on and the music going, and the morning after you have one room to tidy instead of the whole house. The rest of the house stays clean, calm and ready for the next day.

Why It Works in Winter
A room like this only works at Christmas if it is built for the cold. Our rooms are fully insulated in the floor, walls and ceiling, sit on a steel floor frame that will not rot, and include a heater, so the room is comfortable on a December evening. They are plastered and ready to decorate, with the groundworks and electrics taken care of.
Do You Build in Winter?
Yes, we build all year round, and it is one of the questions we are asked most. People worry that it will be too wet or too cold. In practice it makes very little difference, because the sections are made in the factory and the installation on site is much quicker than a traditional build. Unless it is absolutely pouring down, we build as normal, and we factor in extra days over the winter months so the build still runs to schedule.
In some cases the shell of the building can go up in a day. Once the roof is on, the building is protected and we carry on working inside: fitting the doors, making the building watertight and getting on with the rest of the work as usual. Realistically, it is only the first few days where the weather can be an issue.
It is also a good time of year to do it. While nobody is using the garden, we can be building, so the room is finished and ready for the spring when you want to be out there. That is why winter is a popular time for people to get their garden room done.
